5 Things Nobody Tells You Before Visiting San Blas

Most San Blas guides cover the obvious: bring sunscreen, bring cash, wear a swimsuit. Fair, but here’s what actually catches people off guard.

1. You will need more cash than you think

The community entry tax is only the start — souvenirs, extra drinks on the islands, and any last-minute extras are all cash-only. There are no ATMs anywhere in Guna Yala, and cards aren’t accepted on the islands themselves. Bring more USD than feels necessary.

2. The road there is half the experience (for better or worse)

The 2.5-hour 4x4 drive from Panama City to Carti isn’t just a transfer — it’s a scenic mountain crossing through Guna territory. It’s also genuinely winding, so if you get carsick, medicate before you leave, not after you feel it coming on.

3. Meal options are good, but not endlessly flexible

Fish is always available; shellfish like lobster, crab, or calamar depends on what’s fresh that day. Vegetarian and vegan options exist but are limited — if you skip the protein, you’ll get a larger portion of sides instead, not a substitute dish. If you have a serious dietary restriction, bring your own snacks and flag it in advance.

4. There’s no fixed island on your itinerary

Tour operators are upfront about this if you ask: exact islands visited can shift based on weather, logistics, and availability that day. The islands you’ll see are broadly similar in character to what’s advertised, but no operator can promise you’ll stand on one specific named beach — treat published island names as a strong indication, not a guarantee.

5. “No wifi” is the point, not a downside

It surprises a lot of first-timers how completely offline San Blas is. Some islands get a usable cell signal, most don’t, and there’s no wifi anywhere. Plan around it — download maps, music, or anything you need offline beforehand, and expect to actually disconnect. Most visitors end up naming it as a highlight, not a complaint.
