How to Get to San Blas From Panama City

There’s no highway straight to San Blas — getting there is part of the adventure, and it’s worth knowing what to expect before you go.

The route, step by step

  1. Pickup in Panama City — tours include door-to-door pickup from your accommodation, typically between 5:00 and 5:45 AM. Common pickup zones include Obarrio, San Francisco, Amador, Costa del Este, Casco Viejo, Albrook, El Cangrejo, and Punta Paitilla.
  2. 4x4 transfer to Carti — around 2.5 hours by 4x4 vehicle, on a winding mountain road through the Guna Yala comarca (autonomous Guna territory). If you’re prone to motion sickness, this is the leg to prepare for.
  3. Boat crossing — from the Carti embarkation point, a speedboat takes you out to the islands. Total door-to-door time for a day tour runs about 14 hours.

Practical tips

  • Be ready early. Passengers should be ready from 5:00 AM (4:30 AM for the Dutch Cays / Cayos Holandeses tour, since it’s a longer route).
  • Bring your passport or ID. It’s required — not optional — for the Guna territory entry checkpoint.
  • Cash only past this point. There are no ATMs anywhere in Guna Yala.
  • Playa Bonita pickups (Westin, Dreams Playa Bonita) carry a small additional per-person charge due to the extra distance.
  • Pickup location changes must be made at least 24 hours in advance — same-morning changes aren’t possible.

Can I drive myself?

Technically the road is passable, but almost no visitors do this — the logistics of Guna territory permits, boat coordination, and parking at Carti make an organized tour dramatically simpler, and it’s priced to include all of it.
