What to Pack for San Blas
San Blas is remote — no ATMs, no shops beyond basic snacks, and limited storage space on the boats. Pack light, pack smart.
For a day tour
- Biodegradable sunscreen and after-sun care (regular sunscreen is discouraged near the reefs)
- Swimsuit and a beach towel
- A dry bag or waterproof backpack
- Travel-size soap, shampoo — these aren’t provided
- Sunglasses and a cap
- Snacks and water
- A camera
- Enough cash — there are no ATMs in Guna Yala. You’ll need cash for the comarca entry tax ($22 foreigners / $7 residents) plus any extras
- Original passport or ID (a copy is not accepted)
- Motion sickness medication if you’re prone to it — the road to Carti has plenty of curves
Extra for an overnight stay
- Comfortable, light clothing for warm evenings
- Water sandals
- Insect repellent (in addition to sunscreen)
- A small cooler with snacks/drinks if you like (optional)
- Portable phone charger — don’t count on outlets everywhere
What NOT to bring
- Large suitcases, beach chairs, or coolers/ice boxes — boat and vehicle space is limited
- Pets or animals — not permitted anywhere in Guna Yala
- Anything you’d be devastated to lose — this is a barefoot, sand-and-saltwater kind of trip
