San Blas Weather Month-by-Month: A Real Traveler's Breakdown

San Blas has a dry season from roughly December through April, with clearer skies and the busiest travel period, and a rainy season from May through November, marked by short, heavy showers rather than all-day rain. Tours run year-round in both seasons.

Dry season: December through April

This is peak season, and it’s peak for a real reason: skies are clearer, rain is rare, and the light on the water tends to be at its best for photos. It’s also the busiest stretch of the year, so if you’re set on specific dates, book ahead rather than assuming last-minute availability. See our full best time to visit guide for the complete comparison.

Rainy season: May through November

Despite the name, “rainy season” in San Blas doesn’t usually mean a washed-out day. Rain here tends to arrive in short, intense bursts — a heavy 20-minute downpour followed by sun is far more typical than a full day of steady rain. The archipelago is noticeably quieter during these months, and the islands stay just as green and the water just as warm as during the dry season.

Does the specific month actually matter that much?

Less than most travelers assume. The dry-vs-rainy distinction is real, but within each season the day-to-day experience varies more by luck than by which specific month you land on. December and April, both technically “dry season,” can still see the occasional shower; June and October, both “rainy season,” can still deliver several clear days in a row.

Does weather ever cancel a tour?

Only when conditions are genuinely unsafe — in that case, the operator reschedules or issues a full refund, since safety takes priority over the schedule. Ordinary rain, including the short bursts typical of the wet season, doesn’t cancel a tour; boats and islands operate normally through it.

The bottom line by priority

  • Prioritizing clear skies and photos: aim for December through April.
  • Prioritizing fewer crowds and don’t mind an occasional short shower: the rest of the year works just as well.
  • Either way: San Blas genuinely doesn’t have a bad time to visit — the difference between seasons is real, but smaller than the marketing around “peak season” often suggests.
