Snorkeling & Diving in San Blas

San Blas is built for snorkeling, not scuba diving — and knowing that distinction upfront will save you from planning around the wrong activity.

Snorkeling: the main event

Every standard day tour includes time in the water over shallow reef, and the two standout spots are:

  • The Perro Chico shipwreck — a sunken vessel now covered in coral, in water shallow enough for complete beginners, with visibility that’s usually excellent.
  • The Natural Pool — a sandbar where you wade waist-deep rather than swim, known for visible starfish on the sandy bottom.
  • Dutch Cays (Cayos Holandeses) — for travelers who specifically want the best reef quality in the archipelago, this more remote reef is the premium snorkeling stop, included on select tours.

Snorkel gear (mask, snorkel, fins) is not always included as standard — check what’s provided with your specific tour, and pack your own if you want a guaranteed fit.

What about scuba diving?

Here’s the honest answer: standard San Blas day tours and overnight stays don’t include scuba diving with tanks. San Blas’s appeal is shallow, clear-water snorkeling rather than deep-reef or wreck diving — the reefs here are genuinely best experienced at the surface, in water often just a few meters deep. If scuba diving with certified gear is your priority, it’s not the core product of a typical San Blas tour, and we’d rather tell you that upfront than oversell it.

If snorkeling shallow, healthy reefs and a genuine shipwreck is what you’re after, that’s exactly what San Blas delivers — book a VIP or Dutch Cays tour for the best snorkel-focused itineraries.

Practical tips

  • Reef-safe sunscreen only — regular sunscreen chemicals damage coral (see our marine life guide).
  • Life jackets are mandatory on all boats, for adults and children, even for confident swimmers.
  • Bring your own gear if you’re particular about fit — shared gear is sometimes provided, but isn’t guaranteed to fit perfectly.
  • Sun exposure adds up fast on the water — reapply sunscreen and consider a rash guard for longer snorkel sessions.
